Description

This listing describes a pair of gates, an overthrow, a sidescreen, gatepiers, steps, and handrails located at the south-east corner of the churchyard in Malpas. The gates were originally made for Oulton Park, likely in the 1720s during the time of Vanbrugh's work there, and were moved to the Malpas churchyard in 1773, as recorded in the Churchwardens' Accounts. The piers and steps were probably also constructed in 1773.

The gates, overthrow, sidescreen, and handrails are made of wrought iron, while the piers and steps are constructed from red sandstone. Each gate features dogbars, a panel of leafy scrollwork, and an ornate top-rail. The overthrow is adorned with leafy scrollwork and displays the Egerton crest. The sidescreen is present only on the south side of the gates.

The masonry piers have tall recessed panels on each side, projecting plinths, and moulded cornices that support ornate urn finials. There is a flight of eight stone steps supported by a retaining wall, which is inscribed with "Jos. Duckers: Thomas Taylor: Church Wardens: 1823." The handrails are made of plain wrought iron. This structure is one of two pairs of gates originally from Oulton Park, and the design of the gates and overthrow is considered excellent.
