Description

The Hopley Headstone, located south of the nave of the church, is a mid-18th century headstone made of sandstone. It is inscribed with the memory of Samuel Hopley, a poet from Duckington, who passed away on September 11, 1769, at the age of 66. The headstone also commemorates John, the son of Samuel Hopley, who died on November 6, 1791, and Elizabeth, the daughter of Samuel Hopley, who died on July 25, 1741, at the age of 10. Additionally, it mentions Mary, the daughter of John and Mary Hopley, who died in May 1771. This headstone is notable for recording the unusual profession of its primary subject.
