Description
This is a late 18th-century house, though with earlier interior features. It is constructed of irregular bond brown brick with a grey slate roof. The house has a cellar and two storeys, with a three-window front. A plinth of painted bedrock is visible, along with a small cellar door. A six-step concrete flight of stairs leads to the front door, which is of four panels, the lower two being flush and reeded, set within a wooden surround with a flat hood supported by consoles. The windows are replacements from the 19th century, of the six-pane sash type, set within narrow openings with cambered heads. A cornice of five corbelled courses runs along the top of the front elevation, and the roof verges are plain. A chimney is located at the rear left corner. A section of a stone retaining wall for the small front garden still exists.
Inside, the cellar is stone-cut. A two-panel oak door, likely dating to the late 17th or early 18th century, leads to the right-hand parlour. A corner fireplace is in the left-hand parlour. The staircase features shaped splat balusters, also of late 17th-century style, leading to the second-storey landing. In the attic, a partition wall contains an oak truss, with a tie beam close to the floor level and a steep-pitched roof. It’s clear from the building’s structure that the house was raised in height and refaced during the late 18th century.
