Description
Malpas Cross is a Grade II listed cross located in Malpas, Cheshire. The base of the cross is medieval, while the cross itself was erected in 1873 and is made of red sandstone. The octagonal base sits on sloping ground and features seven steps leading to High Street, with five and four steps on its sides leading to Church Street. The octagonal monument, which rests on two stone steps in a 14th-century style, has a gabled niche on each side and is topped with a crocketed spire that supports a cross. The design includes stiff-leaf ornamentation, cusped niche arches, mouchettes, and quatrefoils. The cross is inscribed with a dedication in memory of the Reverend Augustus Thurlow, M.A., Chancellor of the Diocese of Chester and Rector of the Upper Mediety of Malpas for 33 years, who was born on July 3rd, 1802, and died on July 5th, 1873. It was erected by his children.
