Description
Nos. 3 and 5 Church Street are buildings dating from 1729, with No. 3 serving as an office with accommodation above and No. 5 as a shop with accommodation above. The front and east end of No. 3 were refaced around 1900. No. 3 is constructed of stone-dressed hard red brick, while No. 5 is rendered, both topped with grey slate roofs. The buildings are three storeys high and feature two windows, with two full-width attached front parapet gables.
No. 5 has plain square corner pilasters that are rendered and topped with moulded stone caps carrying stone balls. It also has bands at the first and second floors, a cornice at the base of the gable, stone gable finials, and a shop front from around 1900 that includes a recessed central door flanked by panelled softwood pilasters and fascia. The middle storey has two flush unequal sashes with 15 panes, projecting keystones, and moulded cills. The gable of No. 5 is painted to resemble timber framing and contains a replaced small-pane sash.
Between Nos. 3 and 5, the head of the pilaster is inscribed with "D: IA:1729," possibly indicating the builder's name. The rebuilding of No. 3 retains the original design but incorporates the detailing and materials typical of the early 19th century, along with a late 20th-century office door and glazing. The interiors have not been inspected.
