Description
Top End House is a coaching inn that has been converted into a house. It dates from the late 18th century and has had later additions and alterations, including an extension to the rear. The building is constructed of pinkish-brown brick with ashlar dressings and features a pantile roof. It has an L-shaped plan with a central staircase and is two storeys high with three bays, including a central breakforward.
The central doorway is notable for its decorative fielded panelling, which is framed by an eared architrave, a fluted frieze, and a pediment. There is a three-course band at the first floor. The windows are sash types with margin lights, set beneath fluted wedge lintels that have keystones, and they feature stone sills. The ground floor windows have 20th-century shutters. The building also has a wooden dentil eaves cornice, ashlar kneelers, and coping, along with end and ridge stacks. Blocked pitching doors are present at the gable ends.
Inside, there is a rod on a vase dog-leg staircase. Some rooms have chamfered beams and exposed rafters, and there is a grain shoot in the attic.
