Description
Tollgate Cottage is a house that was originally three cottages, dating back to the 16th century. It is timber-framed and positioned at right angles to the roadway, with a set-back extension on the east side from the late 18th century, constructed of brick and flint, topped with a thatched roof. The building has one storey and an attic, featuring one and three windows. The west cross-wing has a half-hipped roof, with a catslide to a western outshot that is hipped at the east end, and three eyebrow dormers. The older part of the cottage showcases exposed framing with rendered infill, while part of the main block has a rendered wall that continues into it, primarily made up of horizontal flint panels, brick quoins, verticals, cambered arches, and a cement plinth. The windows are casements, and there is a boarded door set in a plain frame. The cottage has undergone some detailed improvements in the 20th century.
