Description
This is a mid-19th century stable block constructed of yellow brick with moulded brick detailing, and covered by a slate roof. The building has an L-shaped layout, with a five-bay front range, a symmetrical design, and a 1 ½-storey form, including a three-storey central tower and single-storey wings to the rear.
The square tower features full-height clasping pilasters and a blocked tall archway. A four-light transomed window sits on the first floor, with a rubbed brick head, and a blind circular opening is positioned on the second floor. Above, a dentilled and moulded cornice supports a parapet, leading to a similar cornice over a rendered Dutch gable displaying a coat of arms. A tall hipped roof with lead ridges is topped by an open cupola and weathervane.
The bays on either side of the central tower have blank ground floors. A first-floor string course is followed by an oriel window within a Dutch gabled dormer. Each bay has a two-light casement set within a rubbed brick arch, with a finial to the gable. The end bays slightly project, featuring small pilasters that rise into the gable. A first-floor string course extends to a pediment gable above the wallplate, complete with dentilled and moulded cornice and architrave, supporting a two-light cross window under a rubbed brick arch. The detailing above the window is similar to that of the oriel windows. The roof has ornate vitreous ridge tiles with raised crosses. Stack details on the end walls rise above the eaves, comprised of a pair of diamond shafts. Sash windows with 12 panes are found in the end bays, set within rubbed brick arches.
