Description

The Stables at Bettisfield Park is a two-storey former stable and coach house block built of hand-moulded brick with a slate roof featuring sawtooth eaves. The gables and pediment are adorned with freestone coping, moulded kneelers, and finials. A central wooden cupola sits beneath a steep, swept conical roof topped with a weathervane. The south-facing front has short return walls at either end, creating a U-plan layout.

The main façade has eight bays with openings arranged in groups of three, two, and three, highlighted by a pedimented centerpiece. The two central depressed arches that once served as vehicular bays are now filled with dwarf walls and glazing. On the right and left sides, there are boarded doors topped with round-headed, radial-glazed iron-frame overlights, followed by two small-pane iron-frame windows. The upper storey features a central round-headed recess that frames a small oculus. To the right of center, there are three round-headed former loft doorways with small-pane wood-framed glazing, while to the left of center are two similar windows flanking a former pitching eye that is now glazed. The central pediment displays a date in raised numerals and includes a round clock made by Joyce of Whitchurch.

The symmetrical return walls on both the left and right sides have central boarded doors with overlights, flanked by round-headed windows, mirroring the details of the main range. The upper storeys have blocked round-headed windows beside a central pitching eye, which is blocked on the left wall and boarded on the right wall. The right (east) gable end features a large blind round arch that incorporates a blind pitching eye, while the left (west) gable end has a similar arch with a blocked narrow vent above it. In front of this wall is a concrete mounting block.

The left outer wall includes five inserted windows in the lower storey, ventilators with cast iron grilles between the storeys, an inserted oriel window on the upper left, and a diamond-pattern breather. The right outer wall has similar cast iron grilles, a central pitching eye that is now glazed, and glazed doors on the upper right. The rear of the building has modern windows and stacks but retains two pitching eyes and features a central advanced bay. The interior has been modernized.
