Description

The Stables at Dalton Hall is a stable block built in the late 18th century, with a main entrance front added in the mid 19th century. It is constructed from red and grey brick and features slate roofs, arranged in a quadrangular plan. The main front has seven bays with a symmetrical design. The central bay is rusticated and slightly projects forward, featuring a round-headed opening in a rusticated surround with a slight inward batter. On either side of the central bay are three smaller round-headed openings with fanlights that have radial glazing, all set in rusticated surrounds. Above these openings are keyed oculus windows, also in rusticated surrounds. The building has a bracketed cornice and a balustraded parapet.

Above the central door, there is a low gabled clock tower with rusticated quoins, a clock face, and oversailing eaves beneath a louvred timber lantern. This lantern has keyed round-headed openings beneath a cornice that is capped by a pyramidal lead dome and a weather-vane. The opposing range features an inward-facing elevation with five giant round-headed openings that have an impost band; the outer pairs contain boarded double-leaf doors with panelled overdoors. There are blank segmental-headed openings with sills up to the first-floor level. The north and south ranges have boarded doors with overlights featuring vertical glazing bars, alternating with 12-pane sashes on the ground floor and 6-pane sashes on the first floor. All openings are topped with segmental brick arches. The building has a dentilled brick eaves cornice and axial stacks.

Inside, the stables retain a complete set of late 19th-century loose boxes and fittings, all in excellent condition. NMR Photographs.
