Description
The Summer Pavilion, located to the west of Dalton Hall in Dalton Holme, is a Grade I listed structure dating from before 1737 and is attributed to the architect Colen Campbell. This pavilion is built from brick with a rendered finish and features stone dressings and a slate roof. It has a single-storey design with a tripartite elevation. The building stands on a shallow plinth and is supported by Tuscan columns that have vermiculated bands at the divisions and quoins.
Access to the pavilion is via three stone steps leading to a central round-headed opening, which is wider than the side divisions. This opening features a Greek key impost band that extends across the facade, along with a vermiculated key block. On either side of the central opening are 15-pane unequal sash windows with plain sill bands, and above the impost band are blank rectangular openings. The entablature includes vermiculated dosserets, and the eaves have raked cornices that culminate in a shallow pediment above the central door. The ends and pediment are adorned with spherical urns that have vermiculated equatorial bands.
The rear wall of the pavilion features a large fanlight with radial glazing. Inside, the floor is decorated with a geometric pattern made of large white and small black marble paviours. The pavilion is illustrated in Vitruvius Britannicus, Volume IV, published in 1739, on plates 90-91. NMR Photographs.
