Elvetham War Memorial

The Elvetham War Memorial is made of limestone and is located beside the deconsecrated St Mary's Elvetham church, within the grounds of The Elvetham Hotel in Hampshire.

The memorial features a lantern cross that is intricately carved with decorative details. It stands on a tapering chamfered shaft, which is mounted on a square plinth. The south face of the plinth displays a carved wreath that encircles a central inscription in relief, which reads: IN/ MEMORIAM/ 1914 – 1918.

On the north side, there is an additional inscription that states: “GRANT THEM O LORD ETERNAL REST/ AND LET LIGHT PERPETUAL/ SHINE UPON THEM.” This is followed by the names of the fallen. The other two faces of the plinth are also inscribed with the names of those who died in the First World War.

The memorial is positioned on a three-stepped base. On the top step, there is a later angled tablet that has the years 1939 – 1945 carved in relief, along with the names of the fallen from the Second World War.
