Description

The Sutton in the Isle War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1921, designed by the architect R Wade. The memorial is constructed from limestone and consists of a Latin cross set atop a lantern, which in turn sits on a tapering octagonal limestone shaft. The lantern's four faces are decorated with geometric triangular trefoils surmounted by fleur de lis. The shaft is supported by a square plinth featuring flared pilasters at each corner and moulded footings. The memorial stands on three steps within a small square garden. The west face of the plinth is inscribed with a dedication to the men of the village who died in service during the First World War (1914-1918) and the Second World War (1939-1945). Below this inscription is the phrase "Their name liveth for evermore." The remaining faces of the plinth list the names of those who fell.
