Description

Fairhill is a former pair of houses, subsequently used as bank premises and a shop, dating from the early 18th century. The building is constructed of red brick with decorative white brickwork detailing, including rubbed and gauged brickwork to dressings. It has a plain tiled gabled roof with a parapetted front elevation featuring swept ends, tumbled gable end parapets, and end stacks. The building is arranged in an L-shape with two storeys and an attic, and now has three modern dormers. The front facade is divided into three bays, framed by a main cornice and rusticated quoins in white brick, and separated by a plat band between the floors. The central bay slightly projects with a round-headed arch containing a single twelve-pane sash window, featuring radial glazing bars to the head and a rubbed white brick surround with a raised key block. The flanking bays each have a pair of later twelve-pane sash windows in original openings with square heads and similar white brick rusticated surrounds, the brickwork to the voussoirs being flush. At ground floor, the centre bay has a similar pair of windows, while the flanking bays have doorways with reeded doorcases, enriched with bosses, supporting a flat hood on brackets, and containing panelled bivalve doors. The outer bay retains a similar hung sash window in its original gauged white brick surround. Some repointing has been undertaken to the front, and the brickwork is of Flemish bond. The east gable end wall retains a significant area of original brickwork. The interior has been extensively altered.
