Description
This is a late 17th-century house on the south side of Sutton High Street. The exterior is red brick, predominantly in Flemish bond, and sits on a plinth. The steeply pitched roof is now covered in asbestos tiles, but was originally thatched and has swept end parapets, partly rebuilt with kneelers. A ridge stack is original. The house has two storeys and an attic, with a brick band dividing the storeys. Three 1912 gable dormers are present. The first floor has four small casements with rubbed brick arches, retaining some openings with chamfered mullions and original ironwork. The ground floor also features similar rubbed brick arches, including two early 19th-century twelve-pane hung sashes. The original doorway has an eared surround of moulded brick and a moulded brick cornice, now rendered, as well as a moulded architrave over a six-panelled door consisting of two flush panels and two raised and field panels.
A late 19th-century brick office with a lean-to roof adjoins the house to the west, and a service wing of a different period is located at the rear with a brick and originally reed thatched roof.
The interior features abutting inglenook fireplaces, now sealed, and an original staircase with a closed string, square newel with a faceted finial, and splat section balusters. A first floor staircase, also from the centre room to the attic, is of the same period and shares similar newels and finials and a moulded rail, but the splat section balusters are inclined, tenoned to the newel and parallel to the rail. The main ceiling beams are stop-chamfered, and there are raised and fielded panelled doors. The rear range contains a hearth for a copper and a loft above.
