Description

This is a large, complex barn and attached outbuildings dating to the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries, situated to the north-west of Lodge Farm within Elvetham Park, Hartley Wintney. The main barn is of 7 bays with aisles and a projecting porch in the centre of the south-east side. The two north-east bays were converted into a dwelling in the mid-19th century. The barn is timber-framed and topped by a steeply-sloping red tile roof, with hipped ends except for a small gable at the ridge. The main truss features a high collar, with a lower purlin supported by a vertical resting on the tie-beam, a high-level beam itself. Each massive vertical is braced to the tie-beam and purlin, with a horizontal brace extending to the wall plate and supporting a further vertical to the lowest purlin. The vertical rests on a cill on a low brick wall extending to the external wall. The aisle wall is of red brickwork in English bond, with a high plinth and flanks the south porch. The 2 north-east bays are separated from the barn by a brick party wall, with the adjoining dwelling featuring inserted floors, three small gabled dormers, a larger roof window, two chimney stacks, and domestic openings in the brick walling. Casements and the porch are partially derelict.

To the south-west of the main barn a narrower, 6-bay timber-framed structure extends; its truss has a collar supporting the upper purlin, and a low tie-beam (braced to the verticals) supporting verticals beneath a second line of purlins. It has a red tile roof and the walls are boarded. Adjacent to the south-east side, south of the entrance, is a nearly square extension with a red tile roof and boarded walling. North of the entrance, a narrower, lower block of 10 bays extends at right angles. It is timber-framed, with a low tie beam truss and diagonal struts above. The north-east side is a red brick wall, continued round the south-east end and onwards to enclose the entire barn complex. The interior of this block has both boarded and open sections, and its roof is hipped at the north-east end.
