5/46 Elvetham Hall: Gardeners Cottage -

GV II

1861 (1863). L-shaped ornamental cottage, in Gothic style. 2 storeys, the upper floor being partly within the roof. Very steep slate roof, with ornamented bargeboards, a spire above a projecting turret, 2 dormer gables on the south side, outshots at a lower angle, leaded top to the oriel; shafted stack. Red brickwork in Flemish bond, with black flush patterns, including vertical strings of diapers and a dated (AD 1863) panel, plinth. The upper parts of 2 gables the turret and a gabled (staircase?) block placed high with the roof angle, are elaborately patterns in 1/2-timber-framing, with closely arranged narrow timbers, including straight and curved struts, and curved open brackets sup- porting the turret. Openings are square within and next to the timber-framing but elsewhere become pointed arches and trefoil shapes (all different) filled with patterned tile-hanging or stonework (one dated AD 1861), some pierced. Casements, some mullions and transoms, on the north side a slender oriel. The plain trefoil-headed doorway is beneath the projecting turret.
