Description
Elvetham Hall Gardeners Cottage is an L-shaped ornamental cottage built in 1861, designed in the Gothic style. It has two storeys, with the upper floor partly within the roof. The cottage features a very steep slate roof adorned with ornamented bargeboards, a spire above a projecting turret, and two dormer gables on the south side. There are outshots at a lower angle and a leaded top to the oriel, along with a shafted stack.
The building is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, accented with black flush patterns, including vertical strings of diapers and a panel dated 1863 at the plinth. The upper parts of the two gables, the turret, and a high gabled block feature elaborate half-timber framing, with closely arranged narrow timbers, straight and curved struts, and curved open brackets supporting the turret.
The openings are square within and next to the timber framing, while elsewhere they take the form of pointed arches and trefoil shapes, filled with patterned tile-hanging or stonework, one of which is dated 1861. Some openings are pierced, and there are casements, some with mullions and transoms, along with a slender oriel on the north side. The plain trefoil-headed doorway is located beneath the projecting turret.
