Description

The street lamp outside number 44 on High Street in Fareham dates from 1897. It is made of cast iron and features a cylindrical plinth that includes a date panel and the name of the town. Rising from this plinth is a shaft with a bulbous base adorned with floral bas relief decoration. The shaft has an enriched band and ends in a cornice with cross arms, supporting a large curved lamp bracket with scrolls, which is now fitted with an electric light. This lamp is part of a group of listed buildings on High Street and Union Street, along with the listed street lamps, Nos 1 and 2, the Parish Church of St Peter and St Paul, the Red Lion Hotel, and No 10 East Street. Number 45 on High Street is noted for its local interest.
