Description

This milestone, located on the A34, dates from the early 19th century. It is made of painted stone and features cast-iron plates. The square stone has cast-iron plates on two sides, which are inscribed with the distances to Whitchurch (10 miles), Winchester (22 miles), and Newbury (2 miles). The Winchester and Newtown River turnpike, which opened in 1762, includes this milestone as part of a series along the route. It is a notable example of an early 19th-century milestone with inscribed cast-iron plates.
