Description

Newtown House is an 18th-century building with early 19th-century additions. The central section is older, with later projecting gabled wings. It is two storeys and an attic in height, with a nine-bay facade. The roof is slate, with a mansard form and three dormers in the centre. The windows are sash windows. The walls are stuccoed, with a panelled parapet on the central section and a band running along the first floor. The projecting gabled wings have a slightly projecting centre and a plinth. The centre windows have reeded architraves; the outer windows at both the first floor and ground floor levels are of three lights, the ground floor windows featuring a cornice on thin pilasters, while the inner windows are French windows. A Greek Doric porch has panelled pilasters, double doors, and a half-glazed inner door. The rear (east) elevation is similar, though lacking the projection of the wings, which have angular bays to the ground floor. A stucco doorcase in a Greek order of pilasters is also present. Inside, the building contains a fine staircase, ceiling cornices, and some plain panelling.
