Description
This milestone, dating from the late 18th century, is located on the A30/A303 in Dummer. It is made of painted stone and has a square shape with a cambered top. The stone is worn at the base and sides, featuring inscriptions that indicate distances: 18 miles to Stockbridge, 14 miles to Winchester, 49 miles to London, and 3 miles to Basingstoke. This milestone is part of the turnpikes established in 1755 and 1736 for Stockbridge and Basingstoke, and for Basingstoke, Odiham, and Alton respectively. It serves as a notable example of a late 18th-century milestone.
