Description

This is an 18th-century milestone located on the A30/A303 at the National Grid Reference 547 444. It is made of stone and features a tall design with a cambered head. The sides of the milestone are inscribed with distances: 14 miles to Stockbridge, 53 miles to London, and 7 miles to Basingstoke. This milestone is part of the turnpikes established in 1755 for Stockbridge and Basingstoke, and in 1736 for the route from Basingstoke to Odiham and Alton. It is recognized as a good example of an 18th-century milestone.
