Description

This milestone, dating from the 18th century, is located on the A30/A303 in North Waltham. It is made of painted weathered stone and features a cambered head with sides that are inscribed with distances: 15 miles to Stockbridge, 52 miles to London, and 6 miles to Basingstoke. The milestone is part of the turnpikes established in 1755 for Stockbridge and Basingstoke, and in 1736 for Basingstoke, Odiham, and Alton. It is a good example of an 18th-century milestone.
