Description

This is an 18th-century milestone located on the A30/A303 in Popham. It is a small, weathered stone with a cambered head. The sides of the milestone are inscribed with distances: 13 miles to Stockbridge, 54 miles to London, and 8 miles to Basingstoke. It marks the routes of the Stockbridge and Basingstoke turnpike from 1755 and the Basingstoke, Odiham, and Alton turnpike from 1736. This milestone is a notable example of 18th-century road signage.
