Description
The Old Stores, dated 1896 and designed by Edwin Lutyens, comprise a pair of old store cottages. The building is constructed of brick with pebbledash, tile hung stacks, and plain tiled roofs, and is designed in an Arts and Crafts style with an organised asymmetrical layout. It is two storeys high and has a five-window range. A projecting porch is situated over the entrance door on the right-hand side. The next two bays feature a pair of tile-hung gables extending over a pebble-dashed first floor, which is jettied in the centre and incorporates a ten-light casement window. Below this, a four-light casement sits at the right end, and a five-light casement at the left end. The bay adjacent to the porch on the right contains a three-light casement below. A small two-light casement is visible on the roof at the right. A wing projecting forward two bays is situated to the left, with a hipped front bay containing a three-light dormer window on the roof. A large, late 20th-century bow window with a brick sill has replaced a shop window in this wing. The roofs are steeply pitched. Large three-flue stacks are located on the left wing, with an offset hood, a stack situated between the gables with an offset head, a ridge stack behind this, and a smaller ridge stack to the left of centre.
