Description
This milestone, dating from the 18th century, is located on the A30/A303 near Basingstoke. It is made of painted stone, which has weathered over time. The sides of the milestone are inscribed with distances: 19 miles to Stockbridge, 15 miles to Winchester, 48 miles to London, and 2 miles to Basingstoke. It marks the routes of the Stockbridge and Basingstoke turnpike from 1755 and the Basingstoke, Odiham, and Alton turnpike from 1736. This milestone is a notable example of 18th-century roadside markers.
