Description

This milestone, located on the A30/A303 in Dummer, dates from the 18th century. It is made of painted tooled stone and features a cambered head. The sides of the milestone are inscribed with distances: 16 miles to Stockbridge, 12 miles to Winchester, 51 miles to London, and 5 miles to Basingstoke. It is situated on the turnpikes established in 1755 and 1736 for Stockbridge and Basingstoke, and for Basingstoke, Odham, and Alton, respectively. This milestone is a good example of 18th-century road signage.
