Description

Popham Court is an early 18th century to early 19th century building that stands two storeys high. The main (west) elevation is symmetrical, featuring a half-hexagonal projection in the center, which creates a window arrangement of 2.3.2. The building has a steep hipped slate roof.

The central projection is constructed of red brick in mixed English bond, while the surrounding walls are made of flint and brick arranged in wide vertical strips. The openings are slightly cambered, and there is a raised panel above a plastered niche between the two windows on each side. The windows are sash style, with twenty-four panes, and on the ground floor, the easternmost and central windows are three-light sashes with forty-eight panes. To the east of the projection, there is a 19th-century brick porch topped with a hipped slate roof.

The east elevation was originally symmetrical and featured a small projection in the center. This side has a slightly recessed area that ends in a pilaster with a stone moulded base on a stone plinth, which continues to the eastern end. The middle section, made entirely of brick, has filled-in openings that suggest a central upper window flanked by narrow coupled lights. The west side of the center piece and the remainder of the west side are concealed by a two-storey 19th-century block with two windows, and modern additions have been made at the angle to accommodate the entrance door. The south end features a recessed entrance beneath a cambered arch, with a six-panelled door, all of which relates to a small 19th-century courtyard surrounded on two sides by single-storey ranges and on the other by a wall. To the east of the house, there is a kitchen garden enclosed by a high brick wall, which is stepped at half-height and has a plinth.
