Description
This milestone, located on the A34, dates from the early 19th century. It is made of painted stone and features cast-iron plates on two sides. The plates are inscribed with the distances to Whitchurch (3 miles), Winchester (15 miles), and Newbury (9 miles). The Winchester and Newtown River turnpike was opened in 1762, and this milestone is part of a series that marks this historic route. It is a good example of an early 19th-century milestone with inscribed cast-iron plates.
