Description

Holly Cottage is a cottage that dates back to the 17th century. It has a timber frame and originally consisted of a two-bay lobby entrance house, which was refronted in brick in the 18th century. A one-bay dairy extension was added to the northeast, along with a two-storey rear extension built in the late 19th century. The front of the cottage is now rendered brick, and it features a half-hipped roof covered with old tiles and an off-central brick chimneystack. The cottage has one storey and attics, with three windows, including three gabled dormers that have 19th-century casements. On the ground floor, there are 19th-century casements, with two triple sets framed in original cambered architraves. A stringcourse runs above two original windows, and there is a plinth with a cross-shaped iron tie. The entrance features a 19th-century plank door beneath a 20th-century wooden weather porch. The two-storey rear extension is partly tile-hung. Inside, the cottage has an exposed frame, and the living room includes a chamfered spine beam and an 18th-century wooden fire surround with brackets. The dairy has a wooden lattice window on the side elevation, covered in gauze, along with wooden shelving. A winder staircase with twisted balusters leads to the upper levels, and there are plank and four-panelled doors throughout.
