Description

This is a hall house with a crosswing, now divided into three cottages. The core of the building dates to the late 14th century and was extended in the late 18th century, with alterations made in the mid-20th century. The construction is a mix of brick and timber framing, with the timber frame largely encased in brick. The roof is gabled and covered in old tiles. The layout is an L-shape, consisting of two bays of timber framing with an 18th-century addition forming the left-hand side (number 46). The original hall is number 48, and the crosswing is number 50, which was originally jettied.

The building is two storeys high. A flank chimney is located to the left of number 46, and a chimney is situated in front of the ridge of number 48. The street frontage is brick, with two projecting gables on the left and right, the left one being wider. It has 4-light casement windows with glazing bars, each protected by a brick hoodmould. Plain planked entrance doors are positioned on the right-hand side of each gable and centrally to the left, all with hoodmoulds.

Inside number 46, the end frame of number 48 is visible. In numbers 48 and 50, most of the original timber frame is exposed. Number 50 features large, plain joists, a principal beam, and a reset half ogee-arched, chamfered door frame adjoining a later staircase. The roof is a collar purlin design, with three plain crown posts; the central post is braced in two directions. Number 46 is included on the listing primarily for its group value.
