Description

Nos. 35 and 35A on Rose Street is a Wealden hall house and byre, now converted into two flats. This building dates from the mid-15th century and was refurbished in 1958. It features a timber frame with brick infill and part brick, topped by an old tile roof. The structure is L-shaped, consisting of two framed bays with the former hall located in the southwest bay, which juts out over the road front. At the rear, there is a former byre with three framed bays. The building stands two storeys high and has a ridge chimney on the right side.

On the road front, there is an exposed beam from the ground floor posts, and the former hall bay is underbuilt in brick. A moulded bressumer is located on the left, and the framed bay continues to No. 37, which is listed separately. The first floor has two three-light and two two-light 20th-century diamond leaded casements. On the ground floor, there are two 20th-century three-light transomed and mullioned windows on either side of a planked entrance door, which is accessed by two steps.

Inside, the fine timber frame is exposed, with a moulded bressumer beam that returns between the bays on the ground floor, featuring long shutter grooves along the window on the front elevation. The first floor has jowled posts, chamfered purlins, and a central tie with run-out stops in the former solar. The roof is exposed with clasped purlins and a redundant crown post, showing holes in the rafter feet on the west faces and curved windbraces. There is also a shutter groove along the window in the front elevation above the ground floor window.
