Description

27 and 29 Rose Street are two adjoining cottages that have been combined into one building. They date from the mid to late 15th century, with extensions added in the 17th century and alterations made in the late 18th century. The structure is timber framed and encased in painted old tiles, featuring a gabled roof. It has a U-plan with four framed bays, including two 17th-century framed bay extensions at the rear of No. 29 and one at the rear of No. 27, connected by a catslide roof. The building stands two storeys high, with one storey at the rear. No. 29 has a small chimney on the front roof slope, while No. 27 features a large raked chimney at the rear of its extension.

The front of the building has a projecting plinth and a plat band at the first-floor level. The ground floor is irregular, with three-light 19th-century casement windows that have segmental heads. There are three blocked windows on the first floor. The entrances include two 20th-century doors, one of which is partly glazed. Inside, much of the timber frame is visible on the first floor, showcasing jowled posts, arched braces, windbraces, and a queen post roof. There is an old window opening with shutter grooves in the former northeast gable of No. 27, and similar openings on the southeast sides of both cottages, now covered by the 17th-century extensions.
