Description
This is a timber-framed hall house, now divided into two cottages, located on Rose Street, Wokingham. It dates to the 15th century and has been altered in the 19th and 20th centuries. The original timber frame is now largely concealed by a painted pebbledash render, with an old tile gabled roof. The building comprises three framed bays, with the former hall situated in the central bay. It is two storeys high. A chimney is visible on the ridge of the roof and another on the rear roof slope. A plat band runs along the front of the building at sill level. The front of No.52 has two bays featuring 20th-century two-light casement windows with glazing bars, while No.54 has one bay with a similar three-light window. Plain 20th-century entrance doors are present on the left-hand side of each cottage; the door of No.52 has a glazed top panel, and the door of No.54 is panelled. The interior reveals exposed timber framing on the first floor, including a large arch with tension braces. No.52 contains an inserted inglenook chimney faced with 20th-century brick, although the original chamfered, arched timber lintol remains. A fine side purlin roof is present, featuring large, curved wind braces, though it is heavily sooted over the former hall.
