Description

Mill End Cottages comprise an early 16th-century hall house of two bays with cross wings, located in Little Missenden. The original structure is timber-framed with red brick infill. During the 18th or early 19th century, the hall section was refaced in brick, and the building was subdivided into cottages. The roof is covered with old tiles, and the hall roof timbers are smoke-blackened. It features queen strut roof trusses with curved braces. Number 1 has a projecting bay of the cross wing that has been rebuilt, along with a lean-to and a small first-floor extension at the rear. Windows are primarily 18th and 19th-century casements. There are three doors, and large brick stacks were inserted between the hall and cross wings; the right-hand stack has two diagonal shafts dating to the 17th century. A floor was inserted into the hall. The interior retains chamfered beams and joists, as well as inglenook fireplaces. Number 3 contains strapwork wall paintings on the ground floor, likely dating to the 16th or early 17th century. The building represents a good example of a late medieval hall house.
