Description

The Nook is a hall house that has been converted into two cottages. It dates back to the early 15th century, with alterations made in the 17th century and mid-20th century. The building features a timber frame that is encased in brick, with sections rendered and roughcast. It has an old tiled roof with gabled crosswings at each end, forming an H-plan layout. The central hall consists of two framed bays, while the crosswings include a right one that was originally jettied and is contemporary with the hall, and a left one that was added later. The central section is one and a half storeys tall, while the crosswings are two storeys. The roof of the central section slopes down to low eaves. There are tall chimneys at each end and one at the rear, with the right chimney being larger and featuring two coupled shafts, all topped with clay pots.

The entrance front includes two gabled roof dormers with two-light casements in the central section, and larger similar windows on the ground floor, alongside a plain planked entrance door on the left. The left gable is roughcast and contains a three-light casement on the first floor and a four-light casement on the ground floor. The right gable has a steeper pitched roof and a three-light casement on the ground floor. There is a small 20th-century lean-to extension set back on the left side of No. 39, which has a planked entrance door beneath a small pediment hood.

Inside No. 38, some of the timber frame is exposed, showcasing curved braces in the former hall roof. The crosswing features both curved and straight wind braces, along with a simple collar roof supported by through purlins.
