Description
A hall house and cottage, now divided into two cottages, dating to the early 15th century, with extensions from the 18th century and alterations and extensions in the late 20th century. The building is constructed of timber frame, largely encased in brick, with a partial brick construction, and has an old tile roof, gabled on the right and hipped on the left. It has a rectangular plan of four framed bays, extended to the right and at the rear. The building is two storeys high, with four chimneys – one at each end and two on the front roof slope. The road-facing facade has 19th-century casement windows with glazing bars; three, three-light windows are on the ground and first floors of the left-hand section. There are two plain entrance doors with small flat hoods. The right-hand section features a three-light casement on each floor, the upper window within a gabled dormer, with a 20th-century entrance door at the side. The interiors of both cottages retain extensive exposed timbering, primarily on the first floor. Number 8 features a queen post truss with a bird’s beak moulded tie beam and billet ornament; the second truss has an arch braced collar with hollow chamfers on the braces, springing from carved bosses on jowled posts. Number 9 has a queen post truss and a smaller arch braced collar truss, and likely served as the service end of the original hall house. Both cottages have clasped purlins and curved windbraces, all visible from the first-floor bedrooms.
