Description

An 18th-century house, formerly the Vine Inn, that has undergone alterations. It is two storeys and has a dormer. Originally it had three windows, but the central window is now blocked. The roof is tiled, with a former central ridge stack removed. The street front is brick, painted, and features an overhanging brick eaves cornice. A brick string course runs along the first floor level. The south gable is tile-hung. There is a raked casement dormer. The first floor of the street front has 19th-century sash windows. The south gable return has two and three casement windows, flush framed with glazing bars. Modern shop windows are present. The former Nos 1 and 2 Vine Cottages now form part of the rear premises of No 61.

An early 18th-century range, likely depicted on the Willis map of 1768, exists to the rear. This range has two windows on each former cottage’s south elevation. It has a tiled roof, with a former brick central stack removed. The brickwork is in a Flemish bond pattern, while the west gable and top are tile-hung and the ground floor is stuccoed. The top of the east gable end is timber-framed with brick nogging. A moulded brick string course runs along the first floor level. Segmental arched casement windows with mullions and transoms are present, although the ground floor windows are modern. Former cottage entrances are located on the north side, each with a plain pedimented hood. The former Vine Cottages are connected to No 61 by a single-storey link.
