Description

Phoenix House is an early to mid-18th century house, believed to be designed in the style of James Clarke, a Master Builder from Newbury. Between approximately 1841 and 1923, it served as the Brewer’s House for the Phoenix Brewery. The building is two storeys high with dormers and has a symmetrical facade of five windows. It has a slate roof with coped gables. The walls are red brick and feature a dentil cornice and a parapet with pilaster strips, rising on quoins and flanking a central, pedimented dormer. The dormer window has a round arch, stucco detailing, and impost stones. Recessed sash windows are set within gauged red brick segmental arches. The stone doorcase has rusticated pilasters, an entablature, and an open pediment, framing a round-arched doorway with a fanlight and a raised and fielded panel door.
