Description
No 2 and the former Oddfellows Hall, now converted into flats, was built in 1886 and designed by architect James H Money from Newbury. The builder was Edward James of Pound Street, Newbury, and the stonework was completed by John Pound of Speenhamland. This two-storey building features a symmetrical facade with five windows and a central entrance bay. It is constructed of brick with stone dressings and has a slate roof with moulded brick stacks.
The ground floor is adorned with rusticated brick pilasters on the corners that support a bracketed stone entablature. The first floor has pilaster strips that carry a cornice and a parapet with ramped ends, which support stone urns. The centerpiece above the entrance displays a medallion featuring the arms of the order, accompanied by the motto 'Amicitia amor et veritas', carved by H Ems from Cheltenham. Above this is a shell pediment topped with an urn. The windows are architraved sash types with bracketed sills, and there is a recessed round-arched entrance with wrought iron gables. Additionally, there is an arched entrance to No 2 at the east end.
