Description
The Litten is a building dating from around 1848, originally part of the St Bartholomew's School foundation and later used as a hotel. It is two and a half storeys tall, with a double front and three windows. The building has a double-pile plan and features a slate roof with coped gables and moulded gable stacks. The construction is brick with ashlar dressings, and there are coped, gabled dormers at the end bays. The windows are recessed sash types with hoodmoulds; the outer windows on the first floor consist of three lights, while the ground floor has a splayed bay with four-light windows. A notable feature is the portico with an arched doorway that has a square hoodmould, topped by a stepped pediment flanked by pinnacles. The Litten is part of the former Newbury Commercial School, which includes the adjoining Litten Chapel.
