Description

Bartholomew Manor is an early 16th century hall-house, likely built between 1518 and 1535, featuring a linear three-room plan. It was remodeled in the mid-16th century with the addition of chimneys, a first floor, and a two-storey staircase extension at the rear, changing it from a tie house to a lobby-entrance type. There is a 16th or 17th century rear service wing and staircase at the north end. The east side was refronted in the early 18th century, and the roof was heightened. Further remodeling occurred in the mid-19th century and again in 1927-1928. The building is now divided into two separate occupations.

It stands two storeys tall with dormers; No 6 has a lower roof line. No 4 features a mid-19th century fenestration with a double front of two windows, while No 6 has two windows. The roof is tiled with renewed brick gable stacks, and there is a multi-form stack at the south end. The structure is timber framed with plastered brick nogging on the east front of No 4, and brick gable walls, chimneys, and a rear wing at the north end. The mid-19th century gabled dormers have drooping finials and leaded casements. Sash windows with side-lights and glazing bars are present, along with a mid-19th century gabled porch. No 6 is stuccoed and has casements on the first floor and a sash window with side-lights on the ground floor, along with a modern porch.

No 4 contains notable interior features from the 16th century, including two five-centred, moulded brick fireplaces, an open-well staircase in the rear extension with square newels, and moulded ceiling beams. There are also two blocked diamond-mullioned windows on the first floor at the rear. The north-east room on the first floor has good early 18th century panelling and a chimney-piece.
