Description
Sulhamstead House, now the Thames Valley Police Training College, is a house built in 1748, which underwent rebuilding in the early 19th century, with further alterations in 1852 and 1910. The building features painted stucco and hipped slate roofs. It has a central three-storey, three-bay block with set-back two-storey wings. Architectural details include a plinth, a first-floor cill band, a cornice, a coped parapet, and paired end stacks on both the central block and the wings.
A prominent feature is the central two-storey, three-bay tetrastyle Ionic portico with a triangular pediment. The building has lead downpipes and rainwater heads, and the windows are nine bays of glazing bar sashes with architraves and cornices. There is a central enclosed porch with two three-panelled doors topped by a bracketed cornice. The rear of the building is similar but lacks the portico, while the north-east front consists of four bays. There are low early 19th-century additions to the south-west.
Inside, much of the interior dates from 1910 and features an entrance hall in an early 18th-century style, with coupled Doric pilasters, a screen of coupled Doric columns, and a bifurcating staircase leading to a balcony on the central landing. Other rooms also showcase early 18th-century style panelling, fireplaces, and plaster ceilings.
