Description

SULHAMSTEAD BOTTOM LANE (south-east side) SU 66 NW 3/35 Brazenhead 23.10.51 G.V. II House. Late C16 and early C17. Timber framed with red brick nOgging, brick and flint plinth, and old tile roof. Irregular H-plan with central framed bay flanked by 3 framed bays to north-west and 2 framed bays to south east. Twin gabled wings to south-west. 2 storeys. South-west front: curved braces, queen post trusses exposed in gable ends, ridge stack to right, large ridge stack to left with central square shaft flanked by 2 diamond shafts and moulded plaque to north-west, and end stack to left, at rear. One 3-light diamond leaded casement on each floor of right-hand gable end, one first floor 3-light diamond leaded casement in left hand gable end with ground floor 6-light mullioned and transomed windows beneath. Recessed centre mullioned and transomed windows beneath. Recessed centre with first floor 3-light diamond leaded casement and ground floor boarded door with C16 chamfered frame and lean-to timber porch. North-west front with early C19 Gothick oriel windows. Interior: late C16 staircase in centre bay and good C16 chamfered doorframes to right-hand bays. V.C.H. (Berks), Vol. 3, p.431; B.O.E.
