Description
Nos. 1 and 2, North Cottages are two cottages built around 1912 by Sir Edwin Lutyens in a Neo-Vernacular style. They are constructed of brick with tiled lintels and eaves, topped with an old tile roof. The cottages are arranged in a U-shape with two gabled wings at the front and are 1½ storeys high.
Prominent features include a large central ridge stack and a central ridge stack on each wing, all supported by clasping buttresses. The rear has two half-hipped dormers. The front facade features two ground floor 4-light casements with Caernarvon relieving arches, flanking a central boarded door that has a latticed oval opening above. Each gabled wing has one 4-light casement on each floor, with the ground floor windows also featuring Caernarvon relieving arches and tiled tympana. The return fronts have 2-light casements on the outside and boarded doors in the corners, each with moulded timber porches.
