Description
The Grove is an early 19th-century villa located on Grove Road in Ventnor, built around 1830-1835. This two-storey building features Gothic architectural details and is constructed from crazed rubble with quoins and a buttressed ground floor. The front has three windows, with the outer windows set in three-storey gabled breaks that include saddlestones and kneelers, while the center has a narrow parapet. The steep slate roof is adorned with grouped diagonally set chimneys.
The villa has two-light lancet casement windows with drip moulds in the gables. On the first floor, there is a central glazing bar sash window with a drip mould above, and the outer first-floor windows are Gothic French casements with cornices on consoles above, leading to cast iron Gothic pattern balconettes framed in wood with drop finials. These balconettes are supported on brackets above small, marginal Gothic glazed rectangular bay windows.
A central glazed gabled porch features Gothic marginal glazing. The main doorway has a four-centred arch flanked by shafts. The building is set in a picturesque garden setting.
