Description
No. 53 Union Street is a building dating from around 1850, located on a corner site with Yelf's Road. It stands three storeys tall and is faced with stone that imitates brick. The ground floor is rendered and features heavy banded rustication on a plinth, with rusticated quoins on the sides and a curved corner. The building has a rendered parapet with coping and panels of balusters separated by piers, along with a heavy cornice and frieze, and a cornice at the ground floor level.
The first and second floors have superimposed flat fronted bow windows facing Union Street, each with three sash lights and no glazing bars, along with panelled aprons and a dentil cornice on the second floor. The second floor windows at the corner and on Yelf's Road are recessed sash windows with later glazing bars, set in rendered architrave surrounds. The first floor windows are similar but taller and feature segmental pediments; the corner window on this floor has a small bowed cast iron balcony supported by stone brackets.
The original round-headed doorway and shop window facing Union Street have a keystone above the door and a block sill below the window, which contains plate glass. The ground floor windows on Yelf's Road are large and segment-headed with keystones and moulded sills. A two-storey wing extends along Yelf's Road, maintaining a similar facade treatment but with narrower round-headed windows on the first floor, also featuring keystones and linked by a string course at the springing of the arches. The main cornice includes a dentil band. There is a brick extension of two bays with rendered dressings to the west.
