Description
Nos 51 and 52 on Union Street are a pair of houses built around 1840 to 1850. They are three storeys high and have a rendered, painted finish. The buildings feature banded rustication on the pilasters that flank and divide the pair above the ground floor. There is a frieze and a moulded cornice with X pattern balustrades, which are flanked by piers that project over the second-floor windows. Each house has two windows.
On the second floor, there are recessed sash windows with intact glazing bars on No 52, which are flanked by stucco strips that extend below the block sills. The first floor of No 51 has a recessed sash window on the left, set in a plain stucco surround with an entablature above, a block sill, and a panelled apron below. To the right on No 52, there are three canted bays, each with three lights, featuring sash windows without glazing bars, a frieze, a moulded cornice, and panelled aprons with brackets below. The ground floor has modern shop fronts.
Nos 44 to 53 on Union Street form a group.
