Description
1 Vernon Square is a double fronted semi-detached house built around 1850, which also includes No 1 Belvedere Street. This tall building, notable for Ryde, has four storeys and a semi-basement. It features coursed rendering and wrap round pilasters that rise from a plinth to support a heavy cornice on the second floor. The low pitch hipped slate roof has overhanging eaves.
The entrances face both Vernon Square and Belvedere Street, with three recessed sash windows, most of which retain their glazing bars. A large, broad enclosed porch is adorned with a wrap round pilaster frieze, cornice, and blocking course. While the porch has modern recessed doors, it includes narrow rectangular fanlights set in architrave surrounds. The porch of No 1 Vernon Square has two additional pilasters on the front, and the first floor above has been boxed in and glazed.
No 1 Belvedere Street features a flight of twelve steps with a landing due to the sloping site. The north front facing Melville Street also has three windows, with the center ones being blind. The ground and first floors display superimposed rendered rectangular bays with one window on each side, retaining their glazing bars. These are flanked on both floors by wrap round pilasters, with a frieze and cornice above. A parapet over the building provides a terrace for the second floor windows.
