Description
No 11 Vernon Square is a large house originally built in 1851, now semi-detached with the rear half known as No 45 Melville Street. The building stands three storeys tall on a plinth and features a rough cast exterior. It has a low pitch hipped slate roof with overhanging eaves and a frieze below. The front facing Vernon Square has three windows and a one-window wing to the south, with the central bay slightly projecting forward. There is a cornice at the first floor, and the windows are recessed sash with intact glazing bars and block sills. The central door for No 11 is recessed, featuring four panels (two of which are glazed) and a narrow rectangular fanlight with a plain surround. It is sheltered by a Greek Doric porch with fluted columns and openings on each side.
The north front facing Melville Street is flanked by pilaster strips and has two windows, with squat windows on the second floor and taller ones on the other floors. No 11 Vernon Square has added superimposed canted bays on the ground and first floors, while No 45 Melville Street retains its original fenestration with recessed sash windows, glazing bars, and block sills. A fine anthemion balcony on brackets is present at the first-floor window. To the west, which was originally the garden front, there are three windows. On the left, a two-storey wing projects with a bowed end, articulated by giant pilasters, a frieze cornice, and a parapet with a flat roof. This wing has two windows on its side. All windows throughout the building retain their glazing bars. The ground floor of the adjoining wing features an attractive conservatory with panelled risers, seven lights, and a glazed door, all with marginal glazing, topped with an arched design and eight lights above also with marginal glazing. To the south of this front is another two-storey wing with a cornice and parapet, featuring one window in a similar style, with the ground floor brought forward to align with the conservatory, having a glazed door with a fanlight.
